Many of my clients ask if they can use drugstore cosmetics and get the same results as professional make-up. My answer is usually no, but I do have a few exceptions that I have found and have come to love. I will name my top 3 drugstore finds:
1) L’Oreal Double Extend Mascara in non-waterproof “Carbon Black”: This mascara has been the best for my lashes. It gives great length because of the lash primer it comes with, and it doesn’t flake or get clumpy. I have tried SO MANY mascaras thinking that if they are more expensive they will probably be better, but I always come back to this one. I don’t care for the “tubes” version which is in a red and white package because it makes my lashes feel stuck together at the end of the day. I stick to the one in the black and withe tube.
2) Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in “Pink Please”: I have been a fan of lipstick lately because wearing lipgloss can feel sticky. I found this color which is perfect on many skin tones and works great with minimal make-up or a really smokey eye. Just be sure to keep your lips moisturized and exfoliated otherwise the color will accentuate dryness.
3) Almay Moisturizing Eye Make-up Remover Pads: This product is so convenient and affordable. It comes in the original formula or an oil-free formula for those of you with sensitive eyes. I am a huge fan of Lancome “Bi-Facil” eye make-up remover, but it is irritating that you have to place the solution on a cotton ball… and it costs about 4x as much as these pads. I like to stock up when they are on sale.

Until next time,

xx
Unfortunately these type of spots/blotches started appearing on my own skin about a year ago. I had heard that laser treatments can eliminate this condition, but I was unwilling to pay the high fees that go along with laser treatments. I recently found a product from Clinique called “Even Better Skin Tone Corrector.” Clinique clams it takes 4-6 weeks to see results, so I will keep y’all posted on my personal experience!

I often look to celebrities as inspiration for wedding and special event hair styling and make-up ideas. I recommend that my clients also look at red carpet type styles to inspire themselves. These styles are often more flattering and less contrived than styles seen in “hair” or “wedding” magazines. In the same way that celebrities frequently chose the bronzed cheek/smoky-eye/light lip look in 2009, we are still seeing this make-up trend holding strong for special events in 2010. The main hair trends that were seen are as listed:

1) Wavy not curly. The celebs are opting for a softer looker look for updo’s and downdo’s alike.
2) Off center. Many of the styles were side buns or side ponytails.
3) Pump up the volume. Whether worn up or down, the majority of hair styles had volume through the crown area.
4) Frame the face. When the styles were worn half up or completely up the stars often chose to leave some soft, face framing pieces out.

If you want inspiration for yourself, just Google image search your favorite celeb and “red carpet.” Happy searching!

As women we all know that long healthy hair is associated with beauty. Often times clients come to me wishing their hair was longer or thicker. Did you know that I have a variety of ways to enhance your hair length and thickness with extensions? The extensions I provide vary based upon style, hair color, length of time you want to wear extension, and hair length. For the bride I often suggest temporary clip-in extensions. This type of extension is a custom extension made of human hair and normally consists of 3 pieces. They are really easy to put in and remove, and best of all they are reusable! Since the extensions are made of human hair, you care for them the same way you care for real hair: shampoo lightly, condition and then lay flat to dry. You can style the extension using heated tools such as curling irons of flat irons to blend with your hair style of choice. If you are interested in embellishing your wedding look with some beautiful long hair, please contact me so I can make your custom extension! Rates for the custom extension start at $125 for a 3pc. set of 12″ hair, and increase by $25 for every 2″ of length added. Sure beats those extensions sold in mall kiosks for over $500!

As we are coming to the end of 2009 and looking into 2010, many of us have new years resolutions or changes that we plan to make. One of the best ways to bring in the new year is with a new look! Did you know that as a licensed hair and make-up expert Leslie Fair can also provide haircut and color services? Many of us get stuck in hairstyle ruts that really don’t suit our face shape, fashion or lifestyle. Many clients of mine often desire change, but don’t know where to start. If you are looking for a big change, a dramatic haircut or color change may be just what you need. This type of change is suitable to clients that find themselves putting their hair in a ponytail frequently and really “don’t know what to do with their hair.” If you prefer something more subtle but you still want to freshen up your look, I would suggest adding some layers or soft highlights. It is amazing what a little reshaping and dimension can do to enhance the beauty of you hair! With every hair service I provide I also offer a one on one styling session to help you learn the best ways to keep your hair looking great after you leave the salon. If you are uncertain what you want to do with your hair or just want some advice, please call to schedule a complimentary consultation. I will work with you to create a custom look which will enhance your beauty and will have you on your way to your most glamorous year yet! Until next time… xoxo

With the holidays upon us and many parties and events to attend, many women want to look great but with minimal effort. A great make-up look for this season is one where your lips are the focus of your make-up application. To balance out a more bold lip try pairing it with a lightly lined eye and lots of mascara. The most important thing with pulling off the “bold lip” look is to make sure that your lip color is complimentary to your skin tone. Women with warmer, golden skin that often has yellow undertones should go with colors that have more brown or orange in the color. Think of: maple leaf, cinnamon or spiced cider. Women with cooler skin tones that have pink undertones should opt for colors that have a blue undertone. Think of: cranberry or candied apple. If you are new to wearing color on your lips and don’t feel comfortable with something vibrant you can choose a more sheer texture such as a lip gloss or a satin finish lipstick. Below you will find 8 steps to perfect lips that will be sure to entice that special someone to meet you under the mistletoe! Happy Holidays from Leslie Fair

1. Exfoliate lips. I like to use a little bit of sugar mixed with honey and then I gently rub until any dry skin is removed. Rinse well.
2. Moisturize lips. Apply a balm such as Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 and wait 5 minutes then tissue off completely.
3. Prime lips. Apply foundation (or powder) lightly over lips with a sponge or makeup brush.
4. Line lips. Using a lip liner close to your natural lip color lightly line your lips balancing the shape and adding fullness where desired.
5. Apply color. The secret to a good lipstick application is to use a brush. Feather the lip color evenly inside the lip line.
6. Blot lips. Use a tissue to blot lip color.
7. Set lips. Using a brush or sponge apply a translucent powder over the lips. Dust away excess powder.
8. Finish lips. Using the lip brush apply a second coat of lipstick and you are ready to go!

Hawai’i based clothing line Fighting Eel is a favorite of celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Eva Longoria. During the 5 course dinner event Fighting Eel held a fashion show featuring their latest collection as well as a preview of their new bridal line. The bridal line is simple and chic… perfect for the beachy bride. The hair was worn with loose curls and accented with an assortment of gold headbands. To compliment the fresh style of the clothes, the make-up was kept to a bronze eye with a heavy black liner and a summer peach lipstick with a plumping gloss. Some key products we used on each girl were: MAC “amber lights” eyeshadow, MAC fluidline gel liner in “blackout”, Lancome Color Design lipstick in “groupie”, and Lancome Juicy Tubes in “simmer”. A perfect summer look!
